Rules of Engagement - READ ME

On this site...

This is a Security Guard Community. There are no memberships- it is an open site, meaning that there are no restrictions as to who can post a comment. We have created it this way in hopes that this site can be a venue for conversation and insight shared between guards. We operate within an industry of honesty and trust. We are asking that everyone who is posting here and joining the Security shop-talk has a valid Security, Private Investigator, or Dual license. Because we are operating within Ontario, we are going to base our relevant legal conversations upon Ontario procedures and regulations.

The idea behind this site is that we can come here to talk, raise issues, vent about the industry or our duties and jobs in particular, ask each other questions, and share our inspirations for change. We strive to educate people in our daily lives about Security Guards and the work that they do, with the effort of breaking the common stereotypes and bias towards the industry. Here on this site, we'd like to share with each other and perhaps find some common topics on what we say and how we present our industry to the public, or what issues we all face in our duties that we feel need to change for the Security Industry to move forward.

While we are wanting open and honest shop-talk here, we do need to agree on how we are going about our conversations to both protect ourselves and our jobs, and to keep this site as a useful resource.

IMPORTANT POINTS: If you wish to use this site, you must agree to abide by the rules and information detailed below. All messages express the views of the author, and neither this site or administrators or moderators of the site will be held responsible for the content of any message. By joining and/or posting, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or that will in anyway violate any laws. You also agree to abide by the message board rules listed below, and any future amendments to these rules.

THE RULES: The rules governing this message board are very straight forward and should be easy to abide by. Our goal is to promote a positive environment for the exchange of ideas and the sharing of information.

NOTE: This is not a venue for those who get their kicks from attacking security guards, investigators, companies and individuals from behind the safety of pseudonym. Serious Security Officers will be made very welcome here. “Keyboard Combatants” are not at all welcome and are advised to go elsewhere.

Feel free to vent and complain about, or praise and endorse your job, your co-workers, the company you work for, the industry, or any other security work related subject...however-
  • No one on this site will identify any particular company or individual. You will keep all descriptions general such as 'the company I work for' or 'a fellow Guard on duty'. No one will describe any individual's or company identifying logos, trademarks, personality traits, or physical description to the point that it would single out a company or individual.
  • There will be no profanity or untoward language used on the site directed towards any individual or user. Any spiteful, racist, sexist or slanderous comments or messages about other people, members, companies, or anything else will NOT BE TOLERATED! ANYONE WHO BREAKS THIS RULE WILL HAVE THEIR MESSAGES DELETED.
  • Everyone will avoid unproductive chatter in the comments sections. Keep your messages on-topic. Do not derail threads by introducing unrelated side issues.
  • Please do not use slang or shorthand in your posts e.g. none of this “L8R” (Later) nonsense. Posts should be kept as clear as possible in order to facilitate good quality communication.
  • Disagreement is an important and inevitable part of all healthy discussions. However, all members are expected to disagree in the courteous way associated with mature, secure and capable professionals. If you feel the need to resort to insults, you probably don’t have a valid counter-argument and make it obvious to all that you don’t fully understand what you’re talking about! In the event of an impasse, agreeing to disagree is to be the way forward.
  • Members whose posts are deemed to be deliberately disruptive (i.e. making inflammatory posts whilst refusing to engage in actual discussion) or detrimental to the quality of the board in other ways (i.e. persistently making rambling off-topic posts) will have their posts deleted.
  • All members have a duty to ensure that this site is a positive, beneficial and fun place to be. Therefore members must report all inappropriate posts and all rule breaches to the moderators. If you discover an inappropriate post, please do not reply but instead immediately report it (all reports will be treated in strict confidence).
  • The whole point of the forum is to share information. Therefore please don’t make any “information free” posts! Be sure that your posts add something to the discussion and you are not “talking for the sake of talking”. All posts should be questions aimed at clarifying the views expressed in another post; a statement of your own views including an explanation of why you hold those views and believe them to be true; or statement of an alternative position complete with an explanation of your view and why you hold another view to be invalid or not as valid. This is not a “shout from your soap box” kind of forum. All posts need to add something to the discussion.
  • Moderators and Administrators have the ability to restrict inappropriate content and have the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason.

THE GOLDEN RULE: Don’t take yourself or anyone else too seriously and be sure to enjoy yourself!

  21. Great thread and I appreciate the balanced tone in these discussions. It's true—having properly trained and licensed guards at events, corporate sites, or even construction zones can drastically reduce not only risk but also public anxiety. I’ve personally worked shifts where just a visible presence made a big difference in crowd behaviour and incident prevention.

On the topic of training and professionalism, I recently came across a helpful resource that outlines key static guard duties and responsibilities in a real-world context, especially relevant for those new to the industry. It’s worth checking out if you’re mentoring new recruits or reviewing best practices.

Would love to hear how others here manage incident reporting consistency or patrol route unpredictability—two areas I think we could all exchange insights on.
